prayer of the itinerant

A prayer of thanks and supplication for guidance and protection in life. Written June 2011.

O God, heavenly Father, eternal Spirit, fountain of Light,
I give you my thanks for having given me life to live and light to see today,
as I give you my thanks for life and light yesterday,
the day before that, and all other days leading up to this one.
But as you have seen it good, fit, and proper
that I should live today and see your Light,
Do not abandon me, do not forsake me,
but be with me on the path that has been laid out for me.

Be behind me as my protector,
be before me as my guide,
be beside me as my companion,
and be above me as my God.

Shed your light upon my path, 
that I may see clearly where I go.
Lighten the burden on my shoulders, 
that I may go without fear or hesitation.
Enlighten my heart, 
that I may go with fortitude, courage, and wisdom wherever I may be.

Grant that I may not err, wander, or stray
from my path at any place or at any time.
Grant that I may always make progress along my path
each and every day, no matter how little, no matter how slow,
that I may one day accomplish my true will and destination.
Grant that if anyone else walks along my path with me
that I may walk with them in a spirit of perfect
brotherhood, compassion, friendship, and companionship.

Grant, o Lord, that all this may come to pass for your honor and glory,
for you are mighty, Lord, and your mercy endures forever and ever.
